Thread: Mining Vessel Design Contest

37 posts.

Many years ago, there used to be design contests on this ml and the original TNE ml at Silent Tower. I was wondering if there was any interest in having one about mining vessels. If there is, I'll come up with a list of specifications and post them to the list (and summarily welcome comments/suggestions from the list). If there isn't, then I'll just slink away and we can all forget I said anything. :)

I think this is the last traveller mailign list I'm subbed to.

Fitting that it be the last I leave, given my involvement with TNE.

But I'm out, so I'll be signing off.

I would like to participate.
Any care to draw up some design specifications?
We should keep it to TL 12 or 13 to make it interesting. Too easy to design stuff at TL 15.

I wouldn't mind participating in it too. Not sure I'm any good, but the
process is always a blast.

TL12 ... LUXURY! (as they say in Monty Python) ...

If you want to make it challenging go low; TL9 or TL10, now that's more
challenging.

I would agree with that how about some TL8 to TL10 designs (there are a lot of worlds with that sort of TL in TNE)

I too like the idea of the lower tech end, but then virtually all my TNE
designs are at this end 9-11. I find these much more interesting than the
higher tech stuff.

The question comes up though as to what would differentiate a mining vessel
from any other type of vessel using TNE rules?

Antony

I would guess some of the following

1) ore processing plant
2) Linear accelerator or similar
3) long duration quarters
4) full hnagers for small craft
5) sickbays
6) scoops and processors
7) zero g design

basically anything that gives long duration

Stats for some of these like the ore processor, scoops etc would need to be
brought in from another system. I don't remember anything in TNE that would
cover these. If Gurps has them they will need to be converted to metric of
course.

A big linear accelerator could be done I suppose by fiddling with the mass
driver rules to design a high capacity lower velocity system.

Perhaps the Bussard hydrogen ram scoop construction sequence could be used
for an ore scoop, at least for metallic asteroids. Don't know what it would
do for power requirements though, a smaller funnel but a greater mass to be
shifted?

I would use tractors to "suck" in asteroid debri after a¨'roid has been broken up by various means (laser, explosives)

Tractors are TL16 which was at the cutting edge of pre-collapse Imp tech.

The table in the FFS book is wrong and got the TL levels for repulsors and tractors mixed up.

I prefer tractors to repulsors. Neither got very good rules in TNE. However, the problem with repulsors is that it just a hair shy of being a reactionless thruster.
And There has never been any official errata that adresses the mix-up.

Been reading this in reverse order and it's a great idea... I've still got the Noyutakondo sourcebook and as soon as I read that thread I knew what was being talked about. Very cool idea.

It occures to me that while I'm not going to participate an interesting idea might be to build a ship that once it got to it's destination converted all of it's fuel tank space to refining space and crew quarters this way a very small crew could fly the ship to its destination and then take all of the sundry supplies in the cargo hold and expand into the tankage and such. The ship wouldn't require much in the way of manouver drives once it gets to it's final destination and realistically wouldn't require much when manouvering away from it's origin point as the large engines mean less reducable bulk... Unless one of the engines could be converted into something else at the destination point.

Really I'd kind of envision this as something along the lines of the drill rig from "The Abyss" slow and ugly, possibly towed to a new location via modular cutters but capable.

Type J Seeker

The Type J Seeker is based on the Type S Scout Courier. The power
plant, jump drive, and HEPlaR maneuver drives are retained. The
flight deck is modified by removal of a workstation and
downgrading the sensor and communications suites. A dedicated
engineering workstation is in the main engineering compartment.
The hard point has a laser turret added, which is slaved to the
flight deck work stations. There is no fire control other than a
beam pointer integral to the turret. The crew quarters are
modified by removal of the staterooms and replacement with 2
small staterooms. The major modification is removal of the main
crew lounge and replacement with two 10-ton cargo bays with large
bay doors. The top deck forward 3-ton cargo section is retained
for mining supplies or incidental cargos. The top deck aft
storage is now a small crew lounge with food preparation area. A
small ship’s locker is retained immediately adjacent to
the main airlock. Last, the Air/raft is replaced by a grav buggy
for use in asteroid exploration/prospecting.

Notes: Fuel purification plant (1.05 MW) to refine 508.558 m3
fuel (36.3 tons) in 14.50 hours. The power shortfall means that
the contragrav lifters or the radio may not be powered while the
turret is in operation or some other combination. The life
support system of the older Type S is retained which is prone to
the same issues. Most crews bring at least one extra set of CO2
scrubbers when maneuvering into deep orbit. Normal practice is
two crew performing two crew roles each, such as pilot/sensor ops
and engineer/gunner effectively doubles the operational range of
the Type J Seeker.

Reasonable plan, simple and all that ...
likes: simple conversion for a prospector variant
noted that the electronics section and turret controls were down-graded prior to resale
quibble: grav-buggy effectiveness depending on who's TU your in may not be viable for asteroid operations as there's insufficient gravity for it to work against - if that's YTU then substitute some simple design for it... nice

I have a design that I started, but never finished. I would love to submit it (I thought I missed the deadline so put it off). I can likely have it done by the end of this weekend, if that would be okay.

The contest(?) was for a mining ship design ...
IMHO the Type J would qualify - barely it would definitly be small potatoes though only really suitable for a prospector.  And significant strikes/finds would be better dealt with by a larger vessel.  Still a small fleet of prospectors supporting a (much) larger operation could be viable.
T

I liked the write up on the J cause he specified downgrading the electronics suite and turret being slaved to a position on the bridge (I kinda figured that was mil spec anyway but the way he wrote it up it seems that 1. the bridge controls/programs are not mil-spec and the on-mount gunner position being eliminated makes it difficult for the J to be used for piracy effectively without considerable rework.)

Agreed, the Type J would be 'small potatos', but I'm still
working on the small craft for a 5000 ton mining vessel. More to
come...

If people need more time, that's fine by me. I took the sparse number of
entries to mean that we'd received all that we were going to get.

So far, we have Craig Cook's redesign of the Type J Seeker and Roger
Clark Topaz's "New Dawn" Seeker (see March 12th). I'm guessing that
these are both for TNE-1202 (Contest #2).

Roger Clark Topaz also created the "Ridge Runner" class Free Trader on
March 31st (see Files section). I'm not familiar with the wps file
extension (sorry, me caveman) so I haven't been able to look at it to
determine which of the time periods it was intended for.

So if anyone besides Daryl or Craig are working on a design, please let
me know and we'll wait for you as well. The deadline was kind of
arbitrary anyway. I just didn't want it to go on forever.

It's a MS Works file.

Open MS Word, then file - open using "All files" pick "Ridge Runner" and
word will convert for you.

Open Office will likely convert it as well but as I don't have OO
installed I can't say for certain.

I have designs for both competitions. I just have to transfer the data from my spreadsheet to a more readable format.

I'll try to do it during the weekend.

So, it looks like real life is wanting to kick my butt into next week. I
have no idea how it was I forgot about the myriad of things scheduled this
weekend, but regardless, I did not manage to get around to doing a
write-up for my design. While I can work on it on the bus every
morning/evening while I commute, I’m not sure I’ll manage to finish it
before next weekend. I don’t want to keep pushing the finish-date back,
so if my design is the only one you’re waiting for, please don’t wait on
my account.

That said, a brief overview of the design is:
- engines that can give thrust of 6G’s (mostly for towing purposes)
- 4 space-bots that can take a large tarp (think fuel bladder-like
material) and tie it around medium sized asteroids (or several small
asteroids) for towing, preventing any loss of materials in the process of
transporting (and, effectively, drastically increasing its cargo capacity)
- TL15, 400DT hull and controls, with the rest of the components at TL 12
to allow the ship to be built en mass at both higher and lower tech worlds
- no jump drive, as this ship is one of 12 that work in conjunction with a
large ore processing plant that is, itself, jump enabled but without
maneuver drives (it attaches the 12 ships to it in order to move)
-Not much in the way of G-Hours of fuel because it is designed to refuel
at the processing plant (which will have an abundance of fuel from all the
ice in the asteroids).
- a cool, “flattened, three-sided pyramid” (three sides plus the base)
look to it (I wish I was a graphic artist!!!)

I have the 400DT ship designed (but not written up), but do not have the
ore processing plant designed. Anyone know how much volume/mass ore
processing equipment would take up? I imagine not much mass per volume,
due to all the empty space to contain the rock, but really have no idea.

(I also have a 1201 varriant in mind which would be just the 400DT ship
with jump drive and fuel purification, and the controls replaced with
lower tech versions.)

A bulk ore tug ... interesting, I see the justification for the 6G MD, that is the "unloaded" rating correct?  The tarp idea of hauling possibly whole asteroids though ... hmmm gently, gently catchee asteroid ... still hmmm innovative and this one is purpose built as an mining fleet asset ... not bad at all... I suppose if fuel were an issue they could load bladders in the bulk ore spaces until those were needed, and even refined material wouldn't be going anywhere if you kept control of things so it wouldn't necessarily have to be loaded on board right away ... interesting take on the system.
Tim
PS I'm not in possession of the books anymore so won't be trying to do a write up myself, it is interesting to look at the concepts and ideas that others have however.

Yes, 6G is unloaded rating. The ship's interior structure is only rated for 3G, so the computer systems actually limit max accell to 3G regardless of payload. (I imagine Virus would likely override this as it is self-destructive by nature.)

The idea for wraping and towing asteroids actually comes from this site:

I have fixed a couple of typos on the Type J Seeker.

Type J Seeker
The Type J Seeker is based on the Type S Scout Courier. The power plant, jump drive, and HEPlaR maneuver drives are retained. The flight deck is modified by removal of a workstation and downgrading the sensor and communications suites. A dedicated engineering workstation is located in the main engineering compartment. The hard point has a laser turret added, which is slaved to the flight deck work stations. There is no fire control other than a beam pointer integral to the turret. The crew quarters are modified by removal of the staterooms and replacement with 2 small staterooms. The major modification is removal of the main crew lounge and replacement with two 10-ton cargo bays with large bay doors. The top deck forward 3-ton cargo section is retained for mining supplies or incidental cargos. The top deck aft storage is now a small crew lounge with food preparation area. A small shipfs locker is retained immediately adjacent to the main airlock. Last, the Air/raft is replaced by a grav buggy for use in asteroid exploration/prospecting.

The power shortfall means that the contragrav lifters or the radio may not be powered while the turret is in operation or some other combination. The life support system of the older Type S is retained which is prone to the same issues. Most crews bring at least one extra set of CO2 scrubbers when maneuvering into deep orbit. Normal practice is two crew performing two crew roles each, such as pilot/sensor ops and engineer/gunner which effectively doubles the operational range of the Type J Seeker.

Hi, the Explorer scout is not specifically a mining ship but I thought you might like to have a look at this one. The Explorer scout could be pressed into service as a prospector.

Explorer Class Scout
The PS 32 Explorer Scout is a utilitarian starship encountered within and around the Third Imperium. The Explorer Scout is capable of jump-5 and 4G acceleration. The Explorer Scout is stealthy and expensive compared with similar sized ships such as the more common Gazelle-Class Close Escort, Type T Patrol Cruiser and the Dragon class SDB.

Notes
The Explorer Scout is an advanced design using thruster plates instead of the more usual HEPlaR maneuver drives. A crew of 14 is recommended but the ship can be operated under normal conditions with a skeleton crew of two to three individuals with the appropriate skills. Fuel Scoops are integral. Fuel purification machinery (1 MW), refines 1550 m3 in 46.5 hours. The Explorer Scout has a 0.5415 MW shortfall. The power plant has sufficient fuel for a jump of 5 parsecs and 5 years duration. The ship is capable of jump 5 plus emergency jump 1 and 8 months duration. The Explorer Scout is capable of maximum acceleration of 4.5 G.

Ship Dimensions: L 130 m x W 34-43 m x H 14-29 m variable wedge
The Gorilla has a wedge shaped hull anterior to an open structure frame which is modifiable (by three telescopic pylons, one of the pylons is spinal and two pylons are distal) in length (up to 230m). The ship has four (fully configurable) maneuver modules. Two maneuver modules are outboard of the main hull, and another two maneuver modules outboard at the rear of the open frame. The ship has no contra-grav drive as it is not intended to approach within 100 planetary diameters, indeed such a maneuver may be dangerous or fateful.

Operations:
The Gorilla requires a small fleet of tugs, fuel shuttles and seekers to maintain operations. The Gorilla is capable of carrying up to ten specialists such as belters, pilots or scientists. In normal operations, a large proportion of the Drive Hands are recruited from Belters and perform the operations involved with transporting ore asteroids into the open frame. The 2000 ton cargo module may be modified to contain mining crew, small craft, cargo, or fuel tankage as required. The Gorilla can carry up to 18,000 displacement tons of ore asteroids using lanthanum alloy tethers mounted to hard points on the hull and pylons.

Economics
Assuming a price of 50 Cr per ton for Ni-Fe asteroids, if the Gorilla Mining ship can return 1.9 billion tons of ore to an orbital refinery every 12 months, (18,000 dtons x 14 kl/dton x 7500tons/kl) x 50 Cr/ton = 9.92124 x 10^10 Cr pays for the ship 26 times within two years!
Authors note: No wonder belters go into space looking for a quick buck!! TL 10 civilizations reached for the stars, the almost infinite resources allow wealthy investors to make their money many times over in just four years even if some of the ships were lost due to accidents, piracy, wars etc.

Gorilla Ship's Crew: Officer x 16, Enlisted x 146;

Author's Note: IMTU I use a higher level of automation than in TNE.
Engineering Crew x 0.8, Ship's HEPlaR drive produces 120,000 tons thrust.

Hi all,

The poll is up. I hope it's legible.

Here are the entries. If you can't get the links to work for the Ridge
Runner or the Virginia City don't sweat it. They're both in the Files
section of the website. They're MS Works files so you'll need to convert
them if you don't have MS-Works. If you can't, well, I can send you the
Ridge Runner as Ewan Quibell was kind enough to convert it into RTF for me.

If you have questions, check the list to see if someone's already asked
it or ask the designer. If it isn't, ask away. I leave the poll up for a
while to give people plenty of time to look over the entries before voting.

MS-Works files are legendary in their resistance to conversion (except by the latest Microsoft product). They really need to be posted in a more generic format (Like txt or rtf or pdf) so they can be read by everyone. My version of Microsoft Word displays meaningless symbols.
