It was TNE's story that really grabbed me. Too much of what came before
and after was dry and very much like what you'd find in a textbook.
While textbooks are informative, they rarely inspire.

And, in retrospect, I think this may have ultimately hurt Traveller -
there really wasn't anything in the setting to 'grab' you.

My primary - essentially, /only/ - objection to TNE was /not/ the
wholesale destruction, but the /means/ of that destruction - just based
on what we knew of computers at the time of TNE, Virus represented a
violation of just too many principles that were even then considered
/basic/ for protecting against malware. Of course, with the increasing
capability of browsers, and the advent of such abominations as
unsandboxed Flash, Java, and scripting, the TNE scenario suddenly seems
less improbable, even given that we have people howling about how
insecure browsers, especially Internet Explorer, are...

But TNE did represent a 'doing right' of what the classical setting 'did
wrong' - the PCs /could/ Make A Difference, and we could /see/, not
simply /read/. Did I like the Star Viking motif of the RC expansion? Not
really; that struck me as being more like the Spanish colonization
model, and it's pretty clear that the Anglo-Dutch model was a bit more
successful. But I didn't have to use the Star Vikings; I could run my
own post-Collapse universe with a Dawn League that wasn't in that
expansion mode, but instead did so by fostering trade and /creating/
wealth rather than treating wealth as a zero-sum game.

Yes, that whole "GDW doesn't have a sense of humor" thing I've mentioned
recently. But not only does it come off dry, it tends to understate the
essential mystery and uncertainty that SF should inspire. Everyone is
familiar with the way Marc liked to turn things upside-down (Zhodani,
Aslan non-major), but I find that when a game tells you something in the
same tone that it tells you how to roll to hit a target, having that
reversed feels differently than if the original explanation had been
phrased the way our modern knowledge is presented: "scientists believe,"
"recent studies show," "a majority of historians..." So I tried to write
things as a personality within the game passing on accepted wisdom,
including prejudices from that POV. That made more sense to me, and I
think it also gave that cue to players, "hey, there's something more
here."

Frank made the remark at Celesticon this past year, re: H&I that, "TNE was
the first post-modern RPG," which tickled me because of the attempt to
apply literary forms to a game. He had a point (Frank never needs to say
anything he doesn't mean), though I wouldn't claim TNE to be the first,
and certainly not "deliberately post-modern." It just made sense to do it
that way. And in that "things are not what they seem" ethic I felt I was
deliberately following in Marc's tradition.

Sometimes reading the boards I'm reminded of S.M. Stirling's quote, "There
is a technical term for someone who confuses the opinions of a character
in a book with those of the author. That term is idiot." On the other
hand, there was a guy on one board who picked up that the IK professor guy
was Dulinor's former intelligence chief, and the reason he was so hard on
intelligence services is because he was working through his own
self-judgement and self-loathing. There's no hater like a former
true-believer.

"Pedestrian". "Unhip". Perhaps even "old-school". But that's really only in comparison to the wilder, newer RPG's of the day. (White Wolf? Other bizarre stuff? Assuming you liked those sort of games, that is...)

Anyway, didn't they all get swept aside when a card-game came along and HYPNOTIZED everyone's BRAINS? (Nearest thing to a zombie plague I've ever experienced - no-one was left who was sensible enough to still play RPG's...)

What to some (open-ended) was a strength was to others an Achilles heel.
Those that found it easy to say, "I know what I want to do with this"
could, but would by definition create a balkanized player base. Those who
didn't needed more to "tell them how Traveller is played." That was one of
the things the distributors pounded at us: "give them a role, and
ecological niche so they know how to begin," hence the two adventures in
the TNE rulebook. Which of course the Old Guard thought was a waste of
page count, and attached the game too tightly to the setting. Both sides
had valid needs, but we were always getting advice from
diametrically-opposed directions and incompletely satisfying someone.

To me there was no reason to believe that 57th century computers were
remotely like what we have, what we're really talking about in terms of
cyberwarfare (we have a word for it now) is ECM, constant waves of
measure, counter-measure, counter-counter-measure, and we're always going
to be at a "snapshot" of that endless arms race. I had thought that by
reaching back to the Cymbeline chip, which was already established by CT
could rewire the hardware on which it sat, we could get around some of
that, but obviously what happened is, "I know something about computers,
and know how to make my Mozilla browser secure (or whatever people were
using in 1993), you people are really stupid." And I could have spent
another year trying to make it more "plausible" and it still would have
gotten the same response. We felt at the time that as a single plot device
that people did to themselves, that "poetically" brought the Rebellion
full-circle, that would allow AI, etc., had a lot going for it. And after
five years of essentially unsupported Rebellion, Black Wars, Hard Times,
etc., we needed something to "hit the reset" button that seemed to follow
logically from what had already been printed. If we hadn't had GW
Factbook, DJ lawsuit, and MTG would it have caught on enough with the
people that didn't object? Counter-factuals don't count for much if I
can't slip into that parallel dimension.

By the way, what did you think of the BSG reboot? When I watched the
original series, I thought, "Oh, Dave, you idiot! The NAV system, that's
what I did wrong, it should have been the NAV system." Although not as
strongly as "Firefly" I got a frequent TNE buzz off of BSG, like the Cylon
meta-identities. (But they did those wrong--moving consciousness requires
signal, which you could jam, which proves from TNE terms it was psionics,
which fit in with all the dreams and religious hoo-ha.)

> But TNE did represent a 'doing right' of what the classical setting 'did

Indeed. WTH was an incomplete step in that direction, Regency would have
been similar. The best solution to that would have been a Pocket Empires
sourcebook, but it's hard to believe that would have fit into the
production schedule. We really should have released the Regency
simultaneously with the RC, but there was simply not the resources to do
that.

On the other side of the coin, RC brought in people with a T2K bent, and
military SF miniatures-based shoot 'em ups are a lot quicker to write, and
had a ready audience. Which kind of takes us back up to your first para,
in that sometimes too many "grabs" dilute you as badly as none at all.
(I'm not arguing that TNE did that, it's just an observation.) Fortunately
I don't suffer from, "what would you do differently?" You can't. You did
what you did in that fleeting moment with the best wits you had available.
Experience only comes later, and you can't retrofit that back in time.

Thanks for the honest "warts and all" appreciations. :-)

This was always something that made me laugh about the old guard, so you're
willing to let go Jump Drives that take you from a to b in a week regardless
of the real distance travelled, Anti-Gravity, genetically engineered Wolves,
Pocket Dimensions, psionics and the human race being seeded all over the
galaxy but a silicon based life form that can live inside of computers is
completely off because it's to unrealistic. Wow. Really?

I'm of the in for a penny in for a pound type of people, the cymbline chips
had already been written in as a part of the lore, you can bet your backside
some crazy mother's going to try and weaponize them. So I just shrugged,
said their computers are so far ahead of ours I'll just go with it and tried
not to think about it.

A lot of my friends thought that destroying the 3rd Imperium was going too
far, oh they should have stopped here and then everything would have come
back with a bunch of smaller groups. After reading through all of the MT
source books and Survival Margin that none of the old groups deserved to
survive with the exceptions of Norris and Craig, they all had far too much
blood on their hands and every one of them deserved to go, although getting
mulched by a thresher might have been a little excessive. Plus, the problem
with a bunch of smaller pocket empires is you'd still end up with a war to
reunite the Imperium, none of them were ever going to willingly walk away
from the throne. The war would just start up all over again in another
decade.

I always wondered about the Spiri, my RCES character was a Spiri and I tried
to play a kind of Buddhist shaman. I have a degree in archaeology and
anthropology but I still had a rough time wrapping my head around how to
play the character. I probably came across as more of a weed smoking, tree
hugging hippy. Then the GM threw in the whole clones of my character
everywhere we went.

You're definitely one of the people that TNE was a really good fit for.
Whatever that says about you, me, Frank, and what Frank I expected other
people to be like, who knows.

Re: being eaten by a thresher, I think he deliberately walked into it,
knowing that he had caused it, and thinking that was a reasonably fitting
end. I think it was for him a bit of a grace note at the end, finally
owning up to it all, rather than making people hunt him down and kill him
or put him on trial. Icky to be sure, but dead is dead.

Yes, I agree with you about the pocket empires. If you let the Rebellion
sputter down to heat death, they're still enemy empires and don't get
along, and have not learned anything. They'll just start fighting again so
there is nothing to be gained going that way.

I can't remember much about the Spiri. I think the guys with the facial
tattoos were Lutahlens, right? I assume you have access to PoT, right? All
there is is in there.

Clones?

Clones.

I'm the type of player who like / needs to write character backgrounds. I need to know where my character's coming from and where they're going. Voodoo had a fairly well laid out background including a 1 year blank spot.

When I was much younger I aspired to write, despite the fact that I lack even the most basic grasp of spelling and punctuation, and that kind of carried over into character building. When I built a character it aways had 3 or 4 largish plot hooks for the GM so he didn't have to do all the heavy lifting.

Basically Voodoo wandered off into the snow one winters eve and returned a year later with no memory of the events that had transpired and a child. I'm not entirely sure why or what inspired him to fill that void with a clone plot line, he's been dead for 15 years so I can't ask him, at any rate every where we went in the wilds we'd invariably run into one of Voodoo's clones. I think we met 6 all told, by the end I wasn't even sure if I was just another clone or the original.

Ya the Spiri bit amounts to 2 or 3 sentances. I just took it and ran with it.

Did you have clones a lot in your TNE games? Not exactly standard TNE issue.

I thought you had some Traveller fiction on line someplace. Starship
crews, female main characters, stuff like that.

Lots of blue and green.

Am I thinking of someone else?

Perhaps, but if the mucus in your sinuses is the consistency of Mono brand
window caulk the CPAP does precisely 2 things, jack and shit.

Heterochromia is the condition of having 2 distinctly different colors, it
can apply to the eyes Heterochromia Iridis but can also apply to the skin or
hair. Of course that's neither here nor there.

I had the desire at one time to try monkeying with the logs and turn them
into a kind of novel, or even make them look like a screen play. It would
actually work fairly easily with the IRC logs I think. But I got side
tracked, squirrel!, and then became the father of the ADHD poster child and
so that kind of fell by the way side. I've started writing a bit recently,
but I've yet to find something that'll allow me to easily port documents
back and forth between the iPad and the PC.

I rather liked the Billy Vowells / Myriam dynamic. The story's progressed
since then, Billy and Myriam are still there, and the survival horror
dynamic is back. No sleeping psinonics this time though.

For some reason talking about books and scripts and survival horror suddenly
brought this to mind, makes me laugh every time but it kind of sums up the
pictures that storm through my head.

Sorry you're not feeling well. One of the only side-benefits of sleep
apnea is that the CPAP machine blows that out when it's time to go to
sleep.

Heterochromic is a word with which I am not familiar. I might try
"Huskyish" or "David Bowieish" until someone corrected me.

Re: the log, that sounds likely. It was pretty episodic, and for the time
I was in Distant Suns, I was reminded of it in that you used a very
detailed, narrative style that could easily be moved over into a story of
that kind.

My wife bought one of the new Samsung Galaxy 3's. had it for 1 day and
returned it for an iPad. I'd like to try a Surface but at the price I just
can't bring myself to get one as a trial. That combined with the cash I've
"invested" in iTunes makes it difficult to change gears now. It's the ghost
of Steve Job's still screwing with me.

As for Billy and Myriam, real life happens and it's always more important
than some silly game... Unless your RL is the silly game in which case suck
it up buttercup. It's usually the GM's fault when a PBEM tanks, they get
busy and can't keep things moving along or all the players just seem to
bugger off at once, in which case it's not the GM's fault.

"In an e-mail where..."

Yeah, iPads are great, but there are always going to be one-off middle-man
devices. MS has the right idea with Surface, but they don't seem to be
catching on. Apple still leading in style over substance.

Yeah, I liked the Billy Vowells/Myriam thing too. Too bad I lost the
thread back then.
