Your genetics base need not be abandoned. What if the scientist was called back to, say work for the government making bio-weapons for the war. He might have just shut down the base, as he would be right back after this minor distraction was finished, and it might be interesting to see how his "children" fared on their own. Being that far out in the boonies leaves me to think it was not sponsored by the Solomani but it might have been sponsored by a group who were up to something. Either way the UPP would read X-000000-0. In the notes section when you write up the sub-sector you could note under the planet that the base was shut down intact/abandoned/or striped. As to virus, I have always treated it as just another faction that fought in the war. One that came into beaning late and was able to attack the other factions at their weakest but due to a lack of a solid leadership fell apart after there was no one left to fight. Being so far out you might make the vampire ship a independent ship with a specialist virus (God or Mother) with a bent towards science. Finding the base would be like its Holy Grail. The ship might be a lab or scout belonging to the genetic scientist or perhaps the ship got tired of the killing and it turned its back on the war and left. Your locals, would probably have mixed emotions towards humanoids, running from devotion to homicidal rage but would all see the base as a holy place.

all good stuff, but more good stuff now.

I started creating the star system and it turned out to be a trinary star
system, and the far companion turned out to be a type M0V
which has it's own habitable zone!

I have decided to relocate the base there and create a different primary
UPP. which means I now have a star spangled adventure in hand!
The base itself I have decided was the launch point for Genassist projects
in the surrounding subsectors, possibly the corporate headquarters for the
whole sector, even though it is nowhere near central to the sector, just
central to the worlds in question. and since it is now orbiting an
uninteresting far companion, it's detection would have been minimized even
before the collapse and vampire fleets.
Genassist was doing the ages old 'evil' of tampering with human DNA by
adding certain strands from Native, Terran, and Alien DNA pulled from stocks
of Top Level Predators with the intent of being able to field shock troops
with heavy weapons without the need of powered armor, and being carnivorous,
still able to 'live off the land' as it were.
so now there is the shell of a shipyard capable of constructing ships, but
controlled by carnivore / cannibal human hybrids that see humans as just
another protein source. Bears were done as potential PCS for the T20
campaign, and they are rather docile for the ideas coming to mind (Perhaps
that's why genassist scrubbed the project after all), so that means other
TLPs would have been used. Lions and TIgers come to mind (Oh My 8-) Cheetahs
come to mind as well. Aslan Sprinters eat your hearts out!

Any ideas for Alien Dna hybrids out there???

As for a lab ship, does anyone here remember what the Solomani used as the
equivalent? I can't find it in any of the source books I have on hand. I do
know that the Solomani were up to T16 in life sciences per source material
(issue 13 of the travellers digest, page 26 communications, medical and
environment all at T16.), so that would mean any labships they had would be
the find of the century for for a backwater empire with tech 12 as its best.

The scientists of today think deeply instead of clearly. One must be sane to
think clearly, but one can think deeply and be quite insane.

Allen,

Wolves come to mind as the obvious possibility. Very good predators, and the pack mentality would be a good one for shock troops.

Badger, Badger, Badger...

There are lots of terrestrial carnivorous creatures you can use...

1. Badger (trench troops who can burrow)
2. Wolverine (viking beserkers)
3. Hyenas (Good for attacking and scavenging)

and as mentioned
* Lions (group assaults), Tigers (solo super-soldiers), Cheetahs (fast lone scouts)
* Bears (imagine Kodiak or Polar bear nastiness coming at you)
* Wolves (well honed group tactics), Coyote (lone scouts)

I considered wolves briefly, but I came to the conclusion that they would be
perceived merely as vicious Vargr, like the Urzaeng, the oversized vargr
coreward and to spinward of the windhorn. already describes as massive
enough to give Aslan a fair one on one unarmed, and with a nasty temperament
to boot.
To make em work as the villains i WANT them to be perceived as, they would
by necessity have to be run like, and LOOK like, werewolves.

BTW, where can I get info on the 'empress wave? I never found more than a
brief reference to it and that it makes people a lot crazy, enough to wreck
their own tech in mob frenzies.

Cheetahs are already in the works as the single scout runner types were
battle is already engaged, their sheer sprint speeds (@50 kmh) will make
them nearly impossible to hit without battlecomp assistance in powered
armor. and bears I already ruled out, in canon, Genassist already dubbed em
failures, perhaps the violent streak they wanted didn't enable them to have
the temperament they wanted, or, as bears are loners by temperament, they
were not amenable to military discipline of any kind. Of course, that same
temperament made them ideal for scout service.
Any Shock troops they would have wanted to gengineer would of necessity have
to have been willing to take orders from Human Masters. So Many strains
would not have been considered,
badgers and wolverine for there brutal ...... call it xenophobia for lack of
a better word.
of course, that might explain why the planet is devoid of human life ......
8-)

Hyenas are interesting, I'll have to give 'em some additional thought.

The world definitely is going to be Balkanized along Hybrid strain lines now

I have been following along mostly skimming, than reading, but it sounds a lot like this is the planet of Dr.Morreaux.
