Word today from Loren's brother via Facebook that Loren Wiseman has passed away. I don't know the cause of death at this time. Condolences to Loren's family and friends.

That is terrible news. I know his health has been not the best the past few years but it's still a shock.
Loren will certainly be missed.

If anyone feels like sharing "Loren stories", I think it would make for

Loren liked to use N.B. (nota bene) instead of the simpler "note" in his
writing. When I feel like being a little more formal than just "note this,"
or "note that," I use N.B. and think of Loren.
That was part of his greater interest in Latin and things Roman. He was the
one who hated the name "Trepida" for the TL 14 Imperial grav tank, as it
meant "fearful" which is the opposite of the presumed intent. So I inserted
that conversation into TNE for him.
He also inspired the Victrix-class Sloops because of his love for the 20th
Roman Legion XX Valeria Victrix. I'm not sure exactly where his fondness
for them came from, but they were one of the legions that took Britannia,
built Hadrian's wall, and I think was the last legion in Britain before
things unravelled. The class was in the tradition of the Liberty ships,
"'SS Blah-Blah Liberty" and Victory ships, "SS Blah-Blah Victory," but of
course with "Victrix" (victory) instead. It's funny the way it turned out,
since I knew I got the idea of the word from him, I was trying to remember
the name of the legion he liked when he walked in and asked me if I could
do him a favor and make sure to name one of them Valeria Victrix, which
obviously I did. I don't know if I told him I was going to have to ask him
for that name and he saved me the trouble or not.
Whenever I went over to his apartment his kitchen table was covered with
miniature soldiers and paints and all of the tools for assembling,
modifying, basing, and flocking them, all in various stages of painting and
assembly.

Dave,
Thank you for the story about Loren. I enjoyed both the games and sourcebooks in which he had a part and the period where he contributed to JTAS on the SJG site. I wish I'd known him other than through a distant mirror

It wasn't really that much of a "story," more like some habits and
behaviors he had. I'm trying to think of some actual "stories."
He used to like to tell the story about how he and Marc Miller left work in
the middle of the day to so see Star Wars the day it came out. There wasn't
much to the story, that was pretty much it. Shortly after that is when Marc
would have said, regarding Traveller vis-a-vis Star Wars, "we could do that
scenario."
I remember being at DragonCon with Loren one year, after the exhibit hall
had closed for the day, sitting in the hotel bar inside the gigantic
multi-story atrium trying to have a quiet drink with Loren, and we couldn't
even finish a sentence to each other because all of the LARP players kept
coming up to us and trying to get us to give them the secret code word, or
next clue, or whatever. I can remember one or both of us being annoyed, and
the other one trying to calm him down. I recall one of saying words to the
effect of, "dammit, we're pros, we can't do this 24 hours a day, we need a
break." And I also recall being torn between the sensation of thinking the
idea of the LARP game was cool and liking the idea of being involved in it,
and the sense of being exhausted and wanting to have nothing to do with
gaming for a few minutes.

Comedians and those of us who work in academic IT have the same problem though. People assume we're always "on". Comedians are always supposed to be funny or have something amusing to say, academic IT workers (and I'm one) are supposed to always be knowledgeable of your specific IT problem ("you know a lot about computers, can you..."). Some days, I just want actual mileage between me and an electronic device...
I wish I had a great Loren story, but I don't. Fair to say we were acquainted (we talked online and met in person a couple of times), but that's as far as things got. I will however always remember how much he cared about Traveller and about GDW. I'm glad he got a second act of sorts with Steve Jackson Games.

Harold--
I know exactly what you mean by people wanting you to always be "on," and
that's the word I use for it too.
I also definitely agree with you about Loren getting a second act at SJG,
that made me very happy. Also don't forget that he got into the Adventure
Gaming Hall of Fame. That was pretty important to him and I was so glad
that he got that affirmation or ratification or whatever you want to call
it.

You could always feel Loren's passion for not just Traveller but the entire period of accomplishment at GDW.
His JTAS editorials were always insightful and enjoyable.

His JTAS editorials were always insightful and enjoyable.

Yes, Loren was very proud about all kinds of GDW events or anniversaries. I
think it was Marc who came up with the "one product every 28 days.." stuff,
but I remember Loren remembering our anniversaries, like in 1994
proclaiming that GDW was now old enough to drink.
