Loren liked to use N.B. (nota bene) instead of the simpler "note" in his
writing. When I feel like being a little more formal than just "note this,"
or "note that," I use N.B. and think of Loren.
That was part of his greater interest in Latin and things Roman. He was the
one who hated the name "Trepida" for the TL 14 Imperial grav tank, as it
meant "fearful" which is the opposite of the presumed intent. So I inserted
that conversation into TNE for him.
He also inspired the Victrix-class Sloops because of his love for the 20th
Roman Legion XX Valeria Victrix. I'm not sure exactly where his fondness
for them came from, but they were one of the legions that took Britannia,
built Hadrian's wall, and I think was the last legion in Britain before
things unravelled. The class was in the tradition of the Liberty ships,
"'SS Blah-Blah Liberty" and Victory ships, "SS Blah-Blah Victory," but of
course with "Victrix" (victory) instead. It's funny the way it turned out,
since I knew I got the idea of the word from him, I was trying to remember
the name of the legion he liked when he walked in and asked me if I could
do him a favor and make sure to name one of them Valeria Victrix, which
obviously I did. I don't know if I told him I was going to have to ask him
for that name and he saved me the trouble or not.
Whenever I went over to his apartment his kitchen table was covered with
miniature soldiers and paints and all of the tools for assembling,
modifying, basing, and flocking them, all in various stages of painting and
assembly.
