What's the basic premise behind MongT? I haven't looked at it to be honest. Is it Long Night? 3rd Imp? Rule of Man or something completely different?

Mongoose Traveller is basically a more modern version of Classic Traveller. The rules are pretty similar (tidied up in places. In terms of setting, I think it's set in 1105 so it's basically another CT clone (with all the CT assumptions in place too).
It's pretty good, if you like Classic Traveller. They've also branched out into many different settings too - there's the default 1105 Third Imperium setting, but they also did several 2000AD setting books (Judge Dredd, Strontium Dog, etc) and Hammers Slammers that use the same rules (but are different universes).
The other big thing about MGT is that they released an SRD of Traveller rules under the OGL. That means third party publishers can release their own material for it - Spica Publishing have released several Career and System Books and also have their own Outer Veil setting, and Jon Brazer Enterprises and Gypsy Knight Games and others have released their own material too.
The Core Rulebook is setting-neutral. The setting books are in the same
time frame as CT. Mongoose Traveller is basically a modern update of
Classic Traveller. I highly recommend it.

Wow. I didn't know that about the Traveller SRD. Here is the link for

I would too but in all good faith can not put faith nor trust in Mongoose.

Well just look at all the IPs they have had pulled from them. Most recently
Star Fleet Battles. That was a total cluster f**k.
1st print run of High Gard had pages from Merc in it. Plus the total
attitude of well we are a small company so mistakes happen ,too cavalier an
attitude.

The actual SRD is much better to link to - the travellersrd.com site isn't up to date. Mongoose have recently added the Vehicle Handbook to the SRD.
The actual SRD is in the Developer's Pack, which includes everything you need to publish your own material. It's somewhat buried on the Mongoose website though, but you can download it at:
http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/pdf/travdevpack.zip http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/pdf/travdevpack.zip
(the link can be found at the bottom of http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/rpgs/traveller/core-rulebooks-accessories/traveller-core-rulebook.html http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/rpgs/traveller/core-rulebooks-accessories/traveller-core-rulebook.html )
They have improved print quality and editing over time, but it's taken a while for the message to get through. As for SFB, that doesn't really have anything to do with Traveller.
Interesting. The only thing I know about them is that the few products I've
looked at were rather good, in my opinion. Those would be the Core Rulebook
and Pirates of Drinax, so not much to go on.

I disagree. What they have done in the past with other properties has a
huge bearing on future perceptions.

Whatever happened with SFB was an entirely different set of circumstances than what's going on with Traveller. Mongoose seem to have a good working relationship with Marc and FFE and they do all the writing themselves. I don't know the details of what was going on with SFB while Amarillo were working with Mongoose but it was a very different kind of relationship - Amarillo was heavily involved in it and it looked like they were having a few issues in the writing of it.
>From what I understand, Amarillo decided to take over the writing of SFB/Call to Arms/Prime Directive and I don't think the new arrangement they came up with was anything to do with anything that Mongoose did. So blaming Mongoose for that seems pretty misguided to me.
