I've been making use of the Traveller Map site. I'll scale the map so I
have either just star presence or the high pop names, then screen cap the
resulting map. Then I scan my way across the map using a paint program's
fill tool to block out empty hexes that are not between two adjacent
worlds. In effect, I'm highlighting the voids that you can't use a J2 drive
to cross in one go instead of connecting the dots. Since local traffic is
typically J2 or less, this shows you the obstacles, the isolated worlds,
and the paths that all but the long-range haulers are gong to live on or
have to go around.

I did one for the area around District 268 in the Marches for our last
campaign, and just did another for our new campaign in Delphi. I also did
one for the default star pattern in part of Foreven, out of curiosity.
Yes, what Jim said. It helps you see the "gaps" and "gulfs" with the naked
eye that just don't pop out without this process. I'm sure that doing a J3
or J4 version would also expose interesting insights, but it was just too
laborious to do back in the days of photocopies, scissors, tape, and magic
markers.

But since game design is all about maps, I always had scissors, tape, and
magic markers, and used our photocopier extensively. Another fun Traveller
photocopy project was producing variants of the TL-15 Rampart fighter. I
got the top and side views out of, probably Azhanti High Lightning then
scaled a bunch of line drawings out of Jane's All The World's Aircraft and
created all kinds of hybridized versions with avionics humps, variant
noses, canoe fairings, etc.

We never used any of them, probably because Frank came along and said
something to the effect of, "it won't work that way, in the future that
stuff would be smaller and internal and conformal and you won't see it."

1. Yes, I agree he had a point, think Stealth design,

but

2. No matter "when," people are always going to be needing to shoehorn
extra junk into a design that doesn't quite hold it, and you're going to
"see" that effort somehow,

3. Artists always need art references to work from, and

4. Even if it's not "real/true," people need a visual analog that they can
recognize from real life to help them see, "this is a sophisticated system
with lots of parts that work together that are constantly being improved,"
and being able to see that in our game's illustrations makes it look more
"real" than just some perfectly smooth, featureless thing.

And really, it's not that Frank talked me out of it so much we really
didn't have a necessity for it. I think I was probably doing it for
Arrival Vengeance, and we had already used up all the space on that folio
anyway.

Side note here.

There's a guy who lives not far from me who has a 1958 or so VW bug that has
this odd bump on the truck it's about 4" by 2". Now as we all know the
truck on a bug is where the engine is and so after talking to him for a bit
I broached the subject of what he'd done to the bug. Turns out he was
originally from Germany and he'd rebuilt it over there to drive on the
Autobahns. He'd managed to shoehorn a Porsche 911? Engine into the back
end of this thing with 4 motorcycle carbs, 1 for each cylinder. It'd do
about 120 mph on a straight stretch and handled like a top.

OK, showing my newbieness here: What *IS* a J2 map? I'm assuming jump 2, but in my tiny head, i'm not seeing what that would be like.
You take any standard Traveller subsector or sector map (works better at
the sector level), photocopy it so you don't ruin the original, and then
take a LIGHT GREEN magic marker (it must be LIGHT GREEN or it won't work)
and simply draw a line between all worlds (between the center-points of
the hexes or staggered squares) that are connected by J2 (or J2 and J1, I
can't remember). The goal is to show all worlds that are reachable by a
ship with J2 drives. What you get when you're done is a map that shows
traffic flow patterns for a common Jump performance, or more to the point,
draws attentions where little gaps and gulfs are created, which show you
how traffic would flow around those gulfs, and which worlds are key worlds
because they are the ones most often travelled through to cross those
gulfs.

Basically the eye is fooled by all of the white on a map without those
lines, but the dense webs that result from drawing in the LIGHT GREEN
lines helps you see the underlying patterns better.

And I'm just kidding about light green. That's the color I used on my map,
you can use a different one. However, only LIGHT GREEN is the OFFICIAL TNE
J2 map. Kidding again.

I just replied to that one with one of the maps re-attached with J2 lines
drawn in, but haven't seen it come through yet.

I expect that the list might not send through attachments so it may be
holding up the entire message rather than just stripping it off.

which is to imply of course that both light and sound have frequency in
common, and thus harmonics. And everything,. even at the atomic level has a
vibrational frequency. All elements have direct and indirect influence on
their surrounding areas, creating midspace arias between the fields. From
these conjunctive relativities, the elements combine in to what we perceive
as matter, and thus ourselves and all of existence.

There, that was perfectly clear now, wasn't it? :-)

Tim/DED--

It came through, but: a) it wasn't from me, b) it may have come through
after a long delay, and c) scroll down and look at all of the e-mail
header/code junk that came through that does NOT normally come through on
these things.

Note that code was also on Eamon's original, but the fact that it was
appended at some point might be a sign of something working strangely
somewhere.

Eamon--I will answer you, but am trying to help sort through the "spam"
problem first.
