Thread: Belly of the Beast

I have to ask the worlds that the Hivers "accidentally" destroyed. Was that in recent, 'Lets make a "Dawn League" here... Oops! Maybe we'll try again just over there." history or are we talking in the distant 'Rule of Man' kind of thing?

I ask this because IMO proximity to the events and some kind of direct relationship makes all the difference. While it's easy for us to get riled up at the Germans over the events and tragedies of WWII, its much more difficult to get worked up at the British over the events of say your War of Independence. Unless you have some kind of direct familial connection, say your great great great grandfather had done something special or suffered some horrible fate, the distance through time makes the connection much more difficult to make.

BTW the virus starship factory is Iiselu, in Diaspora. I had to look it up its been stuck in my brain for ages.

Wan't Belly of the Beast the name of the 2nd part of the Guilded Lilly adventure. Might need to call it something else to stop any confusion.

The Guilded Lilly series was completed by Avenger and is on the 2nd TNE Disc from FFE. Part 2 dealt with a fake front put up on a human world by the virus to deceive any avenging PC types. Part 3 was the journey and battles at Iiselu in Diaspora.

I will have to check the history bits in the 1248 freedom leagure sourcebook for how it officially ended :)

Would look forward to another TNE adventure, especially in the direction of the Hivers

I never saw any of the 1248 materials, as much as I wanted to see it I never saw any of it available locally and by the time it did reach print I'd long since given up on any of my "local" gaming stores.

IMHO the 1248 stuff by Avenger was some of the best stuff done for any Traveler
game ever. After reading the first book I got back into TNE and was enthusiastic
about it again,then it got shut off.

Only the first 2 TNE 1248 sourcebooks went to print

there were 2 more 1248 sourcebooks, and 2 ship books - they also did 7 TNE adventures. Everything is on the 2nd TNE disc from FFE.

I'm going to hold onto that because I mentioned that I'd like to run that
adventure here, and of course I've already spilled a bean or two. But
you're correct about temporal proximity, but that is addressed internal to
the storyline.

Thanks for Iiselu/Diaspora. I can clearly remember the process that
brought me there, the color magic marker I used to draw the Jump 2 mains
(green), the place on my wall where it hung, but naturally the
technicality of its name does not stay with the same vividness. We are not
just creatures of the mind, but creatures of physical action with protons
and neutrons.

You are correct, but Frank lifted the name from me. I had briefed him on
the "Into the Belly of the Beast" epic adventure I was going to write to
back up H&I, and obviously the name stuck in his head. When he announced
that he was using that name for Guilded Lilly, I reminded him, "no, I'm
using that over here," and he said, "Oh, okay," and then later he forgot
and put the name back on, and maybe that cycle repeated a couple more
times before I gave up. There are some things that are forces of nature,
and sometimes you can only watch as they carry your house away downstream.

And maybe Frank used the phrase "belly of the beast" a lot, and I picked
it up from him, so he had earlier dibs, but I applied to a specific
product first. I AM sure that Frank did frequently use the following
phrases: "the death of a thousand cuts," "being nibbled to death by
ducks," and "everywhere you go, a$$#oles," the last of which he attributed
to someone he knew. Also, the principle generally referred to as
"Chadwick's Law": "you can never have too much movement," Frank always
called "Glenn Kidd's Law."

So no, since this is all post-official GDW publication hobby,
doing-this-in-my-spare-time stuff, I gets to keep my name.

Please don't tell me how it officially ended in 1248. My brain is firmly
fixed in 1994-5/1202 where it was all still unfolding, and that's where I
like it.

I thought MJD was the perfect guy to do that, having reviewed some of his
MSs while GDW yet lived, and was very pleased that he got the opportunity,
and confident that he would do a good job.

When I got convinced to surface on COTI in 2004 that was just in the final
pre-production phase of 1248, which meant it was a REALLY STUPID time for
me to show up there. I was taking some of the attention from 1248 and MJD
which he rightly deserved, and everytime I honestly answered a question,
"well, we were going to do it this way," it would just make it look like I
was quibbling with the decisions MJD made.

So I discharged my obligation and got out of there as quickly as I could.
And I had plenty of other things to do at the time anyway, running two
major DL development projects, several smaller projects, an LMS, etc.

Should I call you Uxi? :-) I don't have to call you anything, but for me
it feels respectful to call people by their names, and I really value and
enjoy your posts, so that's really the main thing I want to get across.
