Thread: Ship Design Contest

First, count me in on the ship design contest.

Eamon makes a good point about the life support in FF&S-1. I've always pictured it as not only including air and water recycling but also to include a small galley ((well if you calla microwave and a two burner hot plate a galley) and a small area for food storage, I've always assumed 30 days/ person.
I also found FF&S-2 to go into greater detail on this. It has various sized galleys, food types, food storage at different tech levels and includes hydroponic food production. Everything from-I'd rather ear my boots-gruel tanks to colony life support to scrub air, water, and other human byproducts, and production of foods.
I'm looking forward to the specs of the ship, it sounds like you have the makings of two different ships, a diplomatic and first contact ship, something that both the Regency and Coalition could desperately use and a snooper/scout-survey vessel with some real punch.
Roger.

Thanks for the info on FFS2, I'll have to see if I can summarise the options. I also recall reading on one of the Traveller mailing lists about the amount of supplies needed per person per month - another thing to track down.

On the ship mission, I had a quick read-through of the RSB yesterday: given the Regency's rejection of the frontier-opening referendum in 1196, I think they will present it as a snooper/scout - assiduously avoiding any mention of diplomacy missions. That does not mean they won't be considering the latter, but that they want the ships, not debates in the Senate and Moot.

As an aside, thinking about the RQS and diplomacy - I get the feeling that they'd not be interested in anything but multi-world polities. The state-building that the Hivers have been engaging in would be of little interest to them.

Hi all,

I've been unable to locate a copy of FFS2, could anyone summarise the extended life support options from that?

Table 208: Life Support A
Volume Mass Power Price
TL Type (m3/m3) (t/m3) (MW/m3) (MCr/m3)
5 Overpressure 0.001 0.001 - 0.0001
5 I (Minimal) 0.001 0.002 --- 0.0002
5 II (Basic) 0.005 0.005 0.0001 0.0003
6 III (Standard) 0.008 0.008 0.0002 0.0005
7 IV( Extended) 0.016 0.015 0.001 0.001
Volume is required volume of life support per m3 of enclosed hull volume.

Table 209: Life Support B
Volume Mass Power Price Min
TL Type (m3/m3) (t/m3) (MW/m3) (MCr/m3) Persons
5 Oxygen tanks & Masks 0.01 10 - 0.01 -
8 V-a (Endurance) 100 50 0.01 0.1 25
9 V-b (Endurance) 200 75 0.02 0.2 30
10 V-c (Endurance) 500 125 0.05 0.5 40
10 V-d (Endurance) 1,500 200 0.05 1.5 75
All values are per person supported.
Volume is required volume of life support per person
Min Cap: Due to their nature, endurance systems have to be built to support
a minimum number of people.

If you want to increase the duration of a given type of life support system over the listed normal duration, then each increase equal to the normal duration again requires 75% of the base life support. So for double the normal duration, it is 175% normal size.
