Thread: Schmexy Traveller.

9 posts.

I feel compelled to point out that traveller has been the home of the chesty girl in the skin tight vac suit for 30+ years. Not to mention I'm fairly certain the amount of illicit drugs smuggled in characters holds over that time could put an number of Columbian cartels to shame.

I will leave you with the following two images to ponder.

Oh, as for the PG rules... Read the Mongoose Traveller robot creation rules... You can totally make that thing in the locker with those rules.

You know I'm sitting at work, trying to be productive but this while PG traveller thing keeps popping up in my head.

5 people trapped in a tin can for a week straight. I guarantee you there is a whole hell of a lot of inappropriate behavior and shenanigans going on.

Phrases like: Who shrink wrapped the head? Why is my boot full of water and in the freezer? Filling my desk with confetti is not funny Frank! Dave's not here.

There is obviously a lot of fictional sex being had by the fictive
quintillions in the Traveller universe, but that is well within the
referee's purview. I see enough ED ads and little girls wearing lingerie
as clothing in real life that I don't miss its official absence in an RPG.
The art angle is pretty much inevitable, I remember being annoyed by the
cover of Assignment: Vigilante. When I was younger I could recognize
specific men's magazine photos being used as artist's references and
assume it is still going on. A lot of artists made no secret of the fact
that they were just slumming illustrating wargames until they could get
into comic books, and formal art training focuses quite a bit on the human
form. I was mostly irritated that this focus prevented 90% of them from
drawing an automatic pistol whose slide could actually slide, or howitzer
whose carriage could work.

I'm big on equipment that wouldn't work. Bullpup rifles with ejection ports set right against the butt plate drive me bananas and pistol slides that wouldn't work without pulling your thumb off are high on my list.

The worst thing is I've never even owned a gun and I can spot impractical and poorly designed weapons.

The funny thing is I think artists were more put out by my asking for
illos that worked than I was at having to stay on them. Some of that is
the logic of doing piecework for a living, you have to keep up throughput
to keep the checks coming. There's a similar dynamic among some freelance
writers, "I'm going to do enough to get the check, but no more."

I seriously miss Brian Gibson's art from traveller, he was so amazing, such a huge loss.

He was one of the relative minority who enjoyed tech illustrating. The sad
counter-point to that is that those people would have to put a lot of
thought into an illo, understanding how it worked internally before they
could draw it, and sometimes it would be misused and presented as
something else entirely (not during my tenure, I have some 2300 examples
in mind), which would not only make illos seem odd, but make the artist
feel misused, and this logically fed back into the adversarial
relationship that festered among some of the freelance community. The
frustration was real, and honest, and understandable, but sometimes the
negative energy was wearying. But in a perfect world we'd first be
tackling things a lot more important than RPGs.
