The funny thing is I think artists were more put out by my asking for
illos that worked than I was at having to stay on them. Some of that is
the logic of doing piecework for a living, you have to keep up throughput
to keep the checks coming. There's a similar dynamic among some freelance
writers, "I'm going to do enough to get the check, but no more."
