Thread: Re: Ships that were broken (was Re: [Traveller_TNE] Re: What do Hive

Eamon--

When you say "non-FFS" do you mean before FFS was published? Like in the
BL booklet? There are two things going on there. One is that some ships
got designed while the system was evolving, and may not have gotten
thoroughly updated as things changed. Since the flag on the launch was the
lower threshold and not the power density, that might have been something
that hadn't been written yet, or was easy to overlook, easily the latter.

The other is that ship designers could make mistakes faster than I could
check them, much less fix them. I would have a stack of print-outs on my
desk and I would go through them and line out the errors and send them
back for corrections and they would come back with new errors introduced,
and after seeing the same ship in a tractor-feed dot-matrix print-out
literally 10 or 12 times you would just about go blind. BL literally
reduced me to tears. We had missed two or three printer deadlines and the
premise was that the persons making the ships were "going to get them
right this time, really we mean it," and I had been promising my wife our
first "vacation" (a three-day weekend, remember, I worked 80 hours/wk 52
weeks a year for four years straight) that kept getting cancelled, and
here we were on the last day and I started reviewing the ships and they
were ALL f#$%ed up and all of the life just drained out of me because I
was going to have to call my wife and cancel the "vacation" again. I
walked out onto the back porch and just started crying. My disappearance
got some kind of attention in the office and a parade of people came out
to try to keep me from...jumping, or something. Finally our print buyer
came out and told me she called the printer and got us an extension so I
could finish it after the three-day weekend. Even though I wasn't going to
jump, and it was just the second story anyway, I have always thought of
that moment that she "saved my life," because I was just done at that
point. My wife ended up divorcing me anyway. It's hard to remember back
then that all that stuff was done manually with a hand calculator. No
spreadsheets that we could afford, no Internet, no e-mail. Building
mnemonic circuits with stone knives and bearskins.

When did we do the Donosev? Was that BL too? I think maybe I can remember
the counter, with that ice cream scoop. I'll bet we ended up changing the
hangar volume multipliers. I still have all of those old print-outs,
assuming they're not water damaged or chewed up by mice or something. The
only things I threw away were the production schedules and warehouse
reports, and of course I wish I hadn't done that. Also two USS Coral Sea
UIMs that were given to me at her decommissioning ceremony that
accidentally got tossed in an "empty" bag. I spent some time dumpster
diving for those but had to give up. We had a really big dumpster behind
the building.

Oops, I realize I forgot to respond to your asterisk.

*Yeah, I hated the Players Forms, another example of The Distributors
screwing us up one side and down the other. They demanded both the Players
Forms and Referee's Screen, so we added those to the production schedule,
another of those "easy" projects that sucked up disproportionate
development time (q.v. those freaking folios, Star Vikings, etc.). And
then the distributors broke up the discounted box sets to sell the pieces
for more money, and then stopped ordering any backlist for about a year
once that CCG came out.

What? Someone else broke my beautiful Victrix? Harold's got him some
'splainin' to do, letting me think that I ever made a mistake! :-)

Seriously, don't feel bad about pointing out errors, I know it's not
depreciatory. Finding errors is the only way to improve things, and I am
reminded of a line from a PDQ Bach album: "It's the truth, you can't have
opinions about the truth." Perhaps my summoning up recollections of past
white-knuckled chaos makes it sound like I'm making excuses and being
defensive, so maybe I need to dial that back. Most of what I'm thinking,
though, when I retell that stuff is that it's amazing we didn't make more
mistakes than we did, we were doing so much all the time. One sad thing,
though, was that we cut off DC when we did, when I think it was maybe just
on the verge of coming into its own with X-Files on the air. But Les had
left without replacement and while I was relieved that that line would no
longer be competing for my attention, I thought the last two DC books we
put out were the best yet, and set up a really nice Minion Hinter
expansion I wanted to do. Waaaah.

"The Victrix class ship presented within the Guilded Lilly adventure is broken. So here is a replacement version."
Upon further review someone took your Victrix and adapted it to T20.  That wasn't apparent from the original post.  Indeed...
THE GUILDED LILLY (0330, Virus Redux Epic 1, 1995)
No errata identified.
The same is true of many other, but not all TNE sourcebooks.  Thus we have the consolidated TNE errata, available via PDF.  It is however, worth comparing to the consolidated MegaTraveller errata, which is a file that is 3x the size, and noting that the MT errata contains significantly more corrections than the TNE errata, which contains significantly more additions that were not technically anything wrong with the game just improvements.
You have much for which to be proud, no worries.
There was a Victrix in GL? I don't remember that, but Frank did that
almost exclusively on his own, including the clip art. I thought it was in
PoT, RCEG, or something like that. Odd that it was ported into GL with
errors...

Actually maybe I do remember a page in there that re-cycled the Victrix
illo, but why or how the design there would be busted when previous
publications were not (or perhaps they are and now people can go "AHA!").
I think there only was one Victrix illo ever made, although I drew a
three-view for artist's reference, as "make it look like a Lamborghini"
was insufficient.

And I hope you know I was playing when I said, "Harold has some 'splainin39;
to do." You din't have to 'splain nothin'.

I'm reminded of one of Loren's bête noires, that no one knows what
"errata" means. The fact that someone has said, "Thing X is broken," that
is errata. Corrigenda is where someone says, "here39;s what it should be."

Precisely. The Victrix hull was built at TL-(thing) and the controls were
installed at TL-(other thing), so the crown moldings should have been the
"crown moldings to conceal after-market controls, cabling, and conduits"
but incorrectly used "purely decorative crown moldings." Since "crown
moldings to conceal after-market controls, cabling, and conduits" are not
only hollow, but contain a layer of superdense armor to dampen electronic
self-interference, the mass and cost are WAAAY off. And the wainscoting,
well, just don't get me started on the wainscoting, because I already have
an idea of where to wander off with that.
