They had a puppetMantis alien in the pilot and first season. Crime lord
type IIRC. Should have used the individual, if not the species, more.

credentials... I just B5 nerded out there knowing that ;)

Also as the actors called it the Jukebox (Vorlon rep) and when they showed
the Shadows (a bit arachnid like)

I was always impressed with the muppet-aliens in Farscape. About as realistic as you could get with the FX of the time.

And better people than TV producers, e.g., Clarke, frequently fell back
on, "the universe loves to create bipedal intelligent life," even when he
didn't have to show them to an audience.

That was of course after a period where all of his aliens ran around on
many, many tentacles. He recanted that for some reason.

replace them with CGI later. ;-)

In an author's case (printed medium) I feel that the imagination is the
limiting factor. We only have a sample size of 1 for how life can evolve
(our world). I grant you there is diversity within the over arching system
that exists here however we are all carbon based and all are produced by
the same system.

A level of understanding about biology is required most authors simply
don't have. So much of scifi aliens fall under archtypical categories which
I am ok with honestly.
