And better people than TV producers, e.g., Clarke, frequently fell back
on, "the universe loves to create bipedal intelligent life," even when he
didn't have to show them to an audience.

That was of course after a period where all of his aliens ran around on
many, many tentacles. He recanted that for some reason.
