Sounds like there could be a S&R type group that uses realspace engines to get to a destination, managing to get there in less than a week.
Assuming 1G acceleration and deceleration, 3.5 days each, this would give a planet a roughly 900 million kilometers radius sphere that it can rescue people from ships before a jump drive would get there. If you use a different acceleration, multiply the radius by the G rating.
After all, if the ship has 6 days of life support remaining, a Jump S&R ship will be too late when it arrives.
