Suppose an RC ship traveling in the Wilds is contacted by a Vampire Ship
attempting to lure the PC's into closing with it. Have the Vampires learned
not to try to infect ships near the RC? If the Vampire attempted to infect
the RC ship with Virus code via the communication channels, we know that
the RC ship is hardened against this, but would the RC ship be aware of the
attempt? How?
It would make sense that the RC ship would be able to detect infection
attempts much like computers today are aware when a computer virus
attempts to infect it. The exact nature of the warning that the RC crew would receive, whether it's a warning light at the communications
station, a dramatic klaxon sound on the bridge, or something involving a voice amazingly similar to that of Majel Barrett giving you the bad
news, I think, is left up to the referee.
Remember Wilds Rules of Engagement. Unlikely to happen before Sandman,
after which, they should have little to fear

Let's not forget that any virus that has survived this long in the wilds
likely operates under its own "Wilds Rules". I imagine that most of them
have long since given up the data handshake bit a long time ago to prevent
reinfection. Nothing worse than having to burn out half your brain just to
keep yourself alive. Only the recently awakened Viri are likely to continue
trying to handshake with anything. I imagine vampire fleets communicate
digitally among themselves but don't with strange ships, or if they do they
have smaller ships that do the talking, nothing worse than having your
Starburst infected by something antisocial, but having a ships boat
infected, well that's just a minor annoyance.

All virus would have similar "DNA", meaning common bits of code in its
makeup, no matter how evolved it was, and it would be recognized as such,
causing a flag to be raised. Ideally, Virus doesn't infect your commo
system, else you would end up having to replace it (or at least the
hardware/software components) periodically--and that could potentially get
expensive for ships that go outside the AO with any frequency.
I did give a thought to do a side campaign with all players as Coalition
Virus ships, probably Sandman variants (specifically a Sandman - Sexually
Reproducing sub strain) to explore some of these behaviors and set in the
1207 - 1208 timeframe after Solee but before the Black Curtain eruption.
