The characters won't have a ship to start, depending on which way the majority of them go with their generation choices I'll bend the background to suit where the characters are from. Heck, if they go 1/2 term who knows maybe mom and dad are moving to follow work and jr's coming with them.
The NPC crew is going to happen, I've got to have some kind of rudder to make subtle course corrections when need be. The problem with PBEM, is a 15 minute tea and crumpet break can play out over three weeks so the focus of the moment can get lost in the passage of time.
I've pondered the "little sister" angle and its clearly a nice device, as long as it doesn't become a weekly, "where's Karl?" kind of thing.
Thats one of my favorite lines in SW, "No reward is worth this."

Will you be having a large crew and the PCs be out of the lower ranks with NPC superiors? Or will they be in charge of their own destiny? With only one term in a career the PCs will be young (20-22), how did they get their hands on a star ship? If you need NPCs to fill out the crew, as an evil GM I've used this a couple of times. Give a PC a NPC sidekick (picture the PC is trying to get this smoking hot waitress to go out with him when his 14 year old sister comes up to him and says "Oh your ordering lunch, good I'm hungry too.). The ship we're running is a two hundred year old Firefly befitting my favorite phrase from Star Wars "You came in that! Your braver than I thought!
