I've always been a big fan of ridiculously cramped ships for TNE or refits of old ships. I rather liked the idea of my exploration ships being a kind of nut to butt operation capable of slugging it out with mich larger ships.
I think I made a lot of use of hard point mounted missles that were left in orbit as overwatch sentries which would be recovered on the way out.
