Obviously the joke is that most of the world plays soccer, and American football is only played in the US. An American football competition started on the Moon could only draw its teams from the US, because the rest of the world doesn't care.
Except maybe for that bit about random folks colonising the Moon, but that's not about football, and thus irrelevant.
Globally, Rugby is the second most widespread game, and influenced the American and Canadian games, as well as the two main football codes played in Australia (where I'm from). So it would be a compromise, although not a good one.
I'm afraid that Soccer will be the Interplanetary, and then Interstellar Game.
