Since you've played the "OT" card, let's try this. NCAA Tribalism is much
closer to MT faction tribalism than any of us want to admit, and Traveller
fans have been "going there" for 30 years now.
Has anyone done much in their Traveller campaigns with sports? I tried two
things:
1) There was a game called "Grav Ball" that came out in the '80s, maybe by
FASA, kind of a cross between Ender's Game and Rollerball, and I bought it
with the intent that it could be the "big professional sport IN SPACE,"
that we could play as a game-within-a-game in my campaign. But nothing
much ever came of it.
2) I did drop a few seeds in RSB about university rivalries in the Regency
just for kicks, to give people a little bit of color to play with. That
was probably inspired by some college experiences in the ACC with UVA
fans, Clemson fans, etc., which were probably re-awakened in my mind by
the 1991-92 Duke teams. When I was at Duke we stunk, and had no illusions
of national championships, so local ACC rivalries loomed large (and
really, conference rivalries are the only real rivalries; you can't have a
"rivalry" with someone you play every 15 years by chance), UNC, UVA, etc.,
and then all of a sudden in '92 by virtue of winning we got to be the
people everyone hated. Go winners! Straight to hell!
