To wax a little more nostalgic about "Duh," Traveller tends to not be so
much like people living in NYC availing themselves evenly of all the
experiences there, but like people diving deeply into innumerable
"ghettos" noticing that an airplane aboard Intrepid was painted in the
wrong squadron colors, that a Camarasaurus at the Natural History Museum
was reconstructed improperly, that someone in The Lion King sings a little
pitchy, and that this deli can't make a decent pirogue. Traveller is also
like a 33 1/3 record I had as a kid of Winnie the Pooh where Tigger got
serially addicted to everything put in front of him, saying, "That's what
Tiggers love best." Every little subsection of Traveller was infinitely
fascinating and repays infinite attention, but while you're going over 25
messages from the TML saying that their M16s aren't quite right but the
M1911s are right on you get distracted by Frank saying, "we're not going
to have solar sails, they'd never work," and you explain that it's like a
sailboat tacking, and he'd say, "no, there are no keels in space" and then
you'd have to draw vector diagrams, and then you'd be reminded that you
had to get back to aerodynamic performance in different atmosphere types
for the people that just wouldn't go along quietly with, "just use grav
vehicles, okay?" It was always a glass somewhere between empty and
overflowing. I understand that "Guns, Guns, Guns" was good for 20th
century firearms, but its starship design sequence was a little thin.
