As a contrast, I make the comparison between Firefly and Traveller because of two completely different things:
1) The characters act like PCs. They are "ethically challenged merchants" who violently solve their problems using complicated schemes. It was like watching a dramatization of a gaming session.
Have you ever read Darth & Droids web comics (or The Lord of the Rings one that inspired it)? When they pretend it is players running the characters, the entire story changes. With Firefly, no changes would be necessary at all.
2) It is dirty and gritty with a mish-mash of technology. You can a world where horses and trains are major modes of transportation right next to truly hi-tech worlds.
Mostly the first point, though.
