Welcome Scott,
I am very much a storyteller also. I have on occasion tossed the rules aside for the cinematic effect of a characters attempt at something. I would do this with DnD and other gave versions. I have also ran Vampire and other White Wolf games, With White Wolf it is all about the story and little about the die roll. However I find that having a nice balance of the guideline rules and Story/Roll-Play a much nicer and enjoyable experience for the players and GM/Referee/Storyteller.
I was first introduced to Traveller through TNE when it was originally released in the 1993. I have an great love for the setting. Like the best love one has is for one's first girlfriend...lol. I have come to love all the Traveller settings sense. Like you I have leaned more about Traveller from reading and web forums like this one.
