In addition to its popular line of MBTs, the joint industrial alliance
between the ad hoc "Industrial Union" on Lobok (Corridor 0218) and the
military dictatorship on Corfinium (Deneb 3011) produced a wide array
of AFVs for various TEDs and other warlords in the interface region
between Deneb and Corridor sectors. These vehicles followed the same
"on-the-cheap" design philosophy used in tank design and production,
and also borrowed heavily from ancient Soviet designs on prestarflight
Terra. These philosophical and historical departures converged to make
the second line vehicles, primarily APCs and support AFVs, a bunch of
rolling deathtraps. None of these vehicles were designed with the
survival of the crew or carried soldiers even a remote possibility,
given their cramped confines and limited armor. The high mortality
rates were taken as a given, as the low quality nature of infantry
troops on many potential customer worlds made them, as one Corfinium
designer crassly put it, "little better than a used condom wrapper, to
be thrown away after extracting whatever pleasure and usefulness it
contained."
Each vehicle was given a derisive nickname by their makers that was
meant to be both a play upon the ancient Soviet designation and a
macabre joke upon its limited lifespan. Some of their jokes take on
additional meaning depending upon their interpretation. The product
line that was offered included a missile armed Infantry Fighting
Vehicle (IFV) meant to carry a small six man squad in close
accompaniement with the main attack. This vehicle was called the
"Parliamentarian" because of the play upon "BMP" and to reflect the
local Lobokian joke that the first person in line into the inferno of
Perdition was likely to be one's local legislator, itself a reflection
of the corrupt democracy where it was made. A larger tracked APC to be
used as a command and support vehicle was called the "Mount Lebanon",
and its chassis was also used for SAM and tactical missile launch
vehicles. An eight wheeled "battle taxi" for second line or follow up
troops to be carried rapidly through urban or built up areas was called
the "Butterstick" as a play upon "BTR" and to reflect its laughable
armor and limited combat ability. Finally there was a four wheeled
recon vehicle called the "Boredom" (a play upon BRDM) that was also
modified for carrying ATGMs.
