OK I have completed analyzing the main spinal meson gun on the Voroshilef. I have refined the stats for this weapon. Basically it must generate from 45,000Mj to no more than 62,449Mj to get stats close to those on the card. I am going to try and fit a 50,000Mj one as it is a nice round number. This would give revised stats on the card of M(-2)6:12-10-7-4 which makes it a bit better at long range than the printed versions 12-10-6-4 (which incidentally looks like it is impossible to get anyway)

When you say "looks like it is impossible to get" what do you mean?

Since you can beat that performance are you saying you can't match it
exactly?

While trying out various power outputs for the Voroshilef's spinal weapon
(assuming a spherical configuration) you get a meson tunnel with a beam
pointer allowing the 6 hex short range, with at 50,000Mj gives a damage
value at each range band of 1055-528-264-132 this corresponds to BR ratings
of 12-10-7-4
The maximum damage for BR rating 12 is 1249 which on this particular gun
means a discharge of 69,958Mj, this will give BR ratings of 12-10-8-4 on a
170m long TL13 meson gun tube
The minimum discharge for BR rating of 12 is 44,845Mj on this particular gun
this will give BR ratings of 12-10-7-4. The listed stat is 12-10-6-4 a minor
difference yes but one that cannot be generated for a TL13 tube of this
length.

Anthony, if you use the “flattened sphere” configuration, you’ll ‘just’ squeeze enough hull length in, to hit the TL 13 range requirement. It also improves your surface area, and allows for some a BB set of sensors.

The Voroshilef and AHL are my 2 favorite hulls to play with, as modding them is easy. The AHL, with it’s approx. 400 dt (425 dt, if my memory serves...) hull plugs, and the Voro’s, with massive spinal space, made great AssualtRon back bones.
I did consider the flattened sphere/dome disk configuration since the ship looks like a ball stuck in a doughnut. I’ll probably end up doing both. Looks like the TNE version has what I think is called a hedgehog configuration of meson guns and particle accelerators. Tactically since these can only be trained by moving the ship it looks to me to be a weakness in the class. Though if you remember the scene from the film The Last Starfighter where the fighter span in three axis firing its weapons I had a mental image of a Voroshilef doing the same. Don’t think TL13 inertial compensation could cope with this sort of spin though.

That's what I figured you meant, that while the numbers were in a
realistic approximate range, you couldn't get the numbers to parse in
detail. Plus ca change...

One of the things I used to try to do was to overpower things so that you
could push short-range damage values out to medium or long FC range
values.

I should have said, "overbuild" rather than "overpower," as part of it is
of course in building a longer tube.

Frank probably mentioned this in the BR designer's notes, but in
developing BR he discovered that MGs were the true ship killers, and PAs
were just "varmint guns." I think that phenomenon was already clear in
previous editions of Traveller, but I think the T2K derived damage tables
in TNE brought that into sharper focus.

Not sure what you mean by "a weakness in the class." If I understand what
you're talking about, it's a weakness of all linear/spinal weapons in
general.
