That reminds me of something that was unclear to me about TNE ship designs - were the added crew requirements a part of the new mechanics (FF&S), or were they a consequence of the decreased automation necessary in New Era ships?

Yes, Derek, I've also been with you on that sub model. In fact, a lot of
our TNE designs did actually require hot-bunking.
