What you describe is exactly the sort of thing that I love to do, and
hoped that players would be doing. There are few things in life I love
more than a million specialized variants of a basic platform. A-3s and
B-66s and C-135s. Also the sort of
human-ingenuity-making-the-best-use-of-what-they've-got sort of thing if
we could have shoe-horned some kind of "Wilds Equipment Sourcebook" into
the production schedule.

We did a little of that in RCEG, but the ship section was of necessity
dominated by the Clippers. Frank wanted to call them "long ships," for the
"Star Viking" connection, but with my age of sail passion, I persuaded him
that Clipper was a name that tugged on a lot more way-better heartstrings.
"Frigate" is another name that deserves a comeback, but I didn't actually
get around to that. The Lancers and Fusiliers should probably have been
called frigates. Whether they would have lived up to their 44-gun
forebears is another question.

Rick Boquist, the guy who played the skipper of LWS Belladonna in my main
Traveller campaign, did the Clipper design. Frank wanted it longer, so we
stretched it a little, and then within the game, a little more.
