Designers Note:

The below craft was designed using Antti’s Vb-98r2 spreadsheet, with the plasma gun package designed using his Mpw-99r1 sheet. All errors and omissions are strictly my fault, for not checking his spreadsheet formulas….

Procurement/Deployment:

The Reformation Mk I Fire Support Sled is the latest (1203) offering from New Barrows Foundry and Metalwerks. It was designed and produced to meet a requirement issued by the Reformation Coalition Marine Corps, for a squad fire support platform to replace it’s overloaded HBD’s, currently tasked for the mission. By moving away from a dedicated exoskeleton, the “pilot” is able to avoid the reduction in combat effectiveness associated with  “wearing” the typical battle dress suit, though this is accompanied by a reduction in the units close in physical combat ability, a trade off deemed suitable for the unit, given it’s ability to conduct long range pinpoint fires.

The system is currently undergoing a period of limited field trials, attached to RCMC units conducting smash and grab raids throughout the Promise Subsector.

Description:

The Mk I FSS is of the streamlined box configuration, measuring 2.8m long, 2.4m wide, and 2.4m tall, with the walker legs in the fully extended position. The unit is composed of four separate areas: the two side weapon sponsons, the central cockpit/engineering pod, and the propulsion platform on the dorsal surface. Total displacement of the vehicle is 14m3, or one Displacement Ton

The structures are manufactured using 1.7 cm Superdense plate, bolted to a subframe to form the sealed chassis. The desire to utilize the minimum number of different size plates results in a very blocky looking vehicle, but one easy to maintain and upgrade in the field, from a small stockpile of common size elements.

The side weapon sponsons are mirror images of each other, with each having a 1m3 retractable module. Standard configuration for the RCMC trials mounts a fully stabilized 15 chamber 4.75 Mj Plasma Support Weapon, with attached 200 round box magazine in the starboard sponson, while the port sponson contains a configurable MLRS/Tac Missile Package Launcher, capable of handling up to 1000 kg of ordinance, usually a mix of Nail and Lyrebird (RCEG, p106,107) missiles, though larger types from the “Bird” (RCEG, p117) family can be accommodated (note that the pictured launcher is loaded with 8x95kg relic TL 15 Nuclear Tac Missiles, indicating this picture was taken during a major raid on a Vampire nest). Note that the RPPG is the multi barrel version of the cradle gun mounted in the Coalition's Mongoose Class attack speeder.

The central cockpit/engineering pod houses the single operator in the cramped operating station, on a zero/zero ejection seat, complete with integral armour plate for additional operator protection. The operators exterior view is through a WSV array mounted directly in front of the station, or via 360 degree input from the top mounted Extendable Senor Array, projected directly onto a helmet mounted display. Above the right ‘shoulder’ of the craft is the Close-in Surveillance System, housing the gas, radiation, magnetic, and motion sensors.

The huge array of sensors and countermeasures, fully 60% of the total vehicle cost, are designed to provide maximum situational awareness, and to deny target acquisition opportunities to the enemy.

Located behind the crew cockpit is the 3.088MW Piezo-Nuclear Fusion plant and water tank, with enough fluid for 24 hours of continues operation.

The lower propulsion platform contains the units drive systems, a hybrid of both surface and airborne components.

The primary surface system are an Improved Walker bipedal leg assembly, capable of moving the vehicle across terrain at a maximum of 142 kph. The system also has an integral High Efficiency Counter Grav unit, used with the twin Ducted Fan propulsion (300kph, max airspeed), as well as the HEPlaR torch system, mounted aft of the craft, between the two duct fan pods. The two legs are semi-retractable in design, used to improve the vehicles airborne performance, particularly when the HEPlaR system is employed (400 kph, max airspeed).
