Thread: Old CT adventures re-interpreted

10 posts.

This announcement came out in October, so if you guys already know about
this, my apologies. It was new to me.

http://blog.mongoosepublishing.co.uk/?p=832

MJD has been authorized to redo the old CT adventures /Leviathan/ and
/Expedition to Zhodane/. Considering the background of these two, I'd
say that it's a good idea, especially considering who's doing the
writing. ;)

In the original adventure, the group just takes a /Leviathan/ merchant
vessel and explores the Egyrn and Pax Rulin subsectors. Kinda boring as
these are really sparse subsectors with nothing going on. The only good
things to come out of it were the deckplans for the ship and the limited
library data for the subsectors. For me, I found the subsectors so
boring I made my own, though I've never published them on my website.

In the new version, titled /The Last Flight of the Amuar/, the players
investigate the fate of the Amuar and figure out what went wrong.
Certainly sounds more interesting than random wandering.

The original /Expedition to Zhodane/ was worse. There was no trip to
Zhodane! The closest the players got was the Jewell subsector. Lame! And
the person they were helping was delusional. I hated it so much that I
sold it. I didn't think anything was useful.

In the new version, MJD is turning it into a mini-campaign, and the
players will actually travel into Zhodani space. Apparently, it's going
to lead up to the Fifth Frontier War.

I thought that Mongoose's re-working of (open) /Secret of the Ancients/
was well done. Given who's involved with these two re-writes, I'm
optimistic that these two adventures will be far better than their
originals.

One wonders if Expedition to Zhodane will mention the Empress Wave at all, or if the Empress Wave isn't actually a "thing" the Zhodani in that part of the Consulate that will figure into the campaign actually know about yet.

I thought the Leviathan had a great deal of promise. Certainly hunting after one of the lost ships of the class would be fun especially if they send the ship rimward.

I would suppose that if Mongoose told MJD, "No EW," then there won't be
any EW. FWIW, at least it was an attempt to explain things.

I saw on Joshua Bell's map that there's a toggle to show the location of
the EW. And it's present on four milieus that are represented. Now that
was a surprise.

There's also a 1900 milieu, a time far enough out that people can forget
that that whole Virus thing ever happened. The benefit being now the
game can have AI characters.

In 1346, the Black Plague struck Europe, killing 1/3 of the population.  Now, some 671 years later, we're still talking about it.  Similarly, people wouldn't forget "the whole Virus thing".  It would be part of their history in 1900 and children would learn of it in school.  That said, it's pretty clear that AI characters exist even in 1200, so by 1900 they would have achieved some level of acceptance, though there would still be people who find it repulsive at some level.  Prejudice against AI would be ongoing, especially on worlds that suffered the most.

We talk about it. Doubt they talk about it much in China or India.

Now, some 671 years later, we're still talking about it. Similarly,
people wouldn't forget "the whole Virus thing". It would be part of
their history in 1900 and children would learn of it in school. That
said, it's pretty clear that AI characters exist even in 1200, so by
1900 they would have achieved some level of acceptance, though there
would still be people who find it repulsive at some level. Prejudice

Actually the Black Plague struck there too.  But you may have a point.  No Black Plague in the Americas.  They would get their turn at pandemics later...

Virus to the Zhodani Consulate and other points across the Great Rift wasn't the major killer/destroyer it was in the Imperium.  On the other hand, their history of this era would be more dominated by the Empress Wave (another pandemic).

There's also a 1900 milieu, a time far enough out that people can forget
that that whole Virus thing ever happened. The benefit being now the
game can have AI characters.

One wonders if Expedition to Zhodane will mention the Empress Wave at
all, or if the Empress Wave isn't actually a "thing" the Zhodani in that
part of the Consulate that will figure into the campaign actually know
about yet.

This announcement came out in October, so if you guys already know about
this, my apologies. It was new to me.

Given who's involved with these two re-writes, I'm
optimistic that these two adventures will be far better than their
originals.

I've reached the point that pretty much everything written for the timeline after 1116 is valid for its milieu, so long as it doesn't violate pre-1116 canon.  Thus GURPS: Traveller's alternative history is simply "that's one way things could have happened, this is another", so is "Children of Earth", so is Martin's 1248 stuff, etc.  If someone wants to do a 1900 milieu, go for it, just make it consistent.

I've been napping for a while, so forgive this being a bit late.

For me the big appeal of Leviathan was the ability to colonise a world, create a pocket empire, and fight another pocket empire.

None of this made any sense if you thought about the existence of the Imperium right next door, but in the original presentation of the area being relatively unexplored space, it was awesome.

Kind of like TNE, except with simpler rules and no wandering Vampire Fleets to rain on your parade.

I can't see an updated version being an improvement.

Expedition to Zhodane never floated my boat. Too much framework, not enough "everything suddenly interesting".

(And I'm really sad about Loren. :( )
