Thread: DonM's ravings (was Traveller Canon)

2 posts.

Let's correct what my role is (or at least, how I see it)... I present Marc
Miller with options, and he makes the decisions.

As to NOT liking TNE, that's not fully true. As an extension of the GDW
House System, it is very interesting. I still wish someone would unify the
various subsystems and mechanics across the various lines, but that's not
likely to happen anytime soon. Anyone who wishes to tilt at those windmills
with me, drop me a personal e-mail.

As to TNE's non-House System Traveller mechanics, it's amazing how similar
TNE is in places to Mega and T4. I know, as Marc's Legacy Errata guy, I
compare the ancient texts. There's errata for CT that fixes issues in all
of those. And Marc had a file with items collected, and I did get Loren to
review (where he remembered), and Frank (who graciously let us use some CD
items for Striker2). Didn't have Dave available for that, but if he's
willing to review the TNE errata file for things I messed up, I'd be
grateful to fix them.

And yes, personally I'm one of those generic system people; I want
"Traveller" the mechanics to be generic and adaptable to any sci-fi
setting, and the OTU to be written in a way that those books can be used by
anyone, from GURPS to Mongoose to HERO to Pathfinder, and for
CT/MT/TNE/T4/T5. And I do like T5. More than I liked T4 (but that is
flavored by my DGP interactions with Courtney Soloman, and Ken Whitman and
I have had our face-to-face over that now).

As to the legacy editions in general and TNE specifically, Marc wants me to
catch errata, find missing manuscripts, drafts and adventures, and help him
negotiate fixing problems that no one ever fixed. So if there's a part of
TNE that isn't on the two CDs that FFE sells, or of there's a problem with
a file on one of those CDs, or if there's an errata issue no one has
tracked down... Or any other issue that Marc Miller should know about. I
serve as his reminder guy for responding, as retirement and family time
distract him from the more important task of gaming (I'm luckier - I
married a gamer, and we have a gamer son).

And if I miss a mechanic or two, when it comes to TNE I do rely on several
people catching my own mistakes.

And my personal campaigns are either T5-specific, spread across several
Traveller editions, or (my apologies) HERO system; my wife loves that
system, so I find things go much easier if I run my Traveller games using
it. And if you are near Central Illinois, I run a game convention annually
called Winter War (been chairman now for 21 years, and if some one would
want to run a Traveller game next January, drop me an e-mail).

I don't know if Dave Nielsen remembers CITW, but sadly we lost both Rich
Nelson and Greg Novak two years ago. For years, CITW (Central Illinois
Tabletop Warriors) was the playtest group that gamed in GDW's warehouse.

Don--

I'm not sure who Dave Nielsen is, but I remember CITW and especially Greg
Novak. I saw Frank at Celesticon shortly after Greg and Winston Hamilton
died and we talked about them a lot.

I can look over the TNE errata/corrigenda and see what I can recover, but
am not sure how quick a process that would be. The main thing I want to
avoid is this: I will only be able to say what we thought or intended or
would have done in 1991-5, and someone could say that my
thought/intent/woulda doesn't count anymore, it's not up to me. I don't
mind that, that's the plain reality of the past 20 years. But it feels
kind of pointless to nominate fixes for other people to harangue over when
they can already do that without me.
