Thread: Throwback Thursday on Monday

2 posts.

From GEnie...if you don't know what that is, in the days before the World Web Web, there were subscription services that allowed you to communicate in real time and send out messages mailing list style within the system.  We used GEnie, which stood for 'General Electric Network for Information Exchange'.  Most people back then had a 28.8k modem (broadband, what's that?), though eventually 56k modems were introduced.  We were talking about the creation of TNE.

Clay is no longer with us sadly, but how many of the rest of us are still around?

Sub: Traveller On-Line Conference

The Conference is still on for Tuesday, Jan 12, 9pm EST.
Many of you are probably not aware of how to use the On-Line
Conference area, so I'll give a brief overview.
First off, go to menu 805 to get to Scorpia's area, then pick
option 2 to go into On-Line Conference.  At that point, you'll have
the option to go into one of 10 rooms.  Unless you hear otherwise,
pick Room 4, the Adventure room.  (Room 3 will probably be active as
well, but that's not us.)
While you're in the room, whenever you type something and hit
return, you'll see the line you typed repeated, preceded by your
GEnie address.  The repeated line will also appear on everyone else's
screens as well.  (Remember to shorten your lines to account for the
extra length added by your GEnie address, otherwise the line will wrap
on people's screens.)
To get out, type '/exit39;, and GEnie will take you back to menu
805.  For additional commands you might find convenient, type '/help39;.
(These won't appear on other people's screens.)
Protocol.  To keep things simple, if you want to say something
that takes more than one line, deliberately break each line so that
none end with a period, if possible, until the last.
To answer a question Terry posed earlier, we do not have any kind
of formal agenda (unless Dave or Loren have something in mind).  This
is primarily a brainstorming session.  We might learn more about how
GDW's thinking is running on TNE.  But its not complete by any means,
and they're looking for input from us.
In preparation for the conference, here are some ideas you
might consider:
     1)  Thoughts regarding the Character Generation draft (file 5527).
     2)  What does it take for a world to raise in tech level?  Is it
a matter of investing resources?  What are the other parameters or
limiting factors?  How fast can a TL rise?
     3)  More about the questions Frank raised on the board regarding
jump drives and ship computers.
     4)  What kind of product support you'd like to see for New Era.
     5)  Adventure ideas.
I don't have to tell anyone here that certain things are set in
stone, like Traveller going to the House System and the Virus.  But
others that might join us could try to debate moot points like this.
If so, maybe you "old hands" could help clue these folks in and keep
the dialogue on a constructive track.

Now that takes me back, was working odd hours then so I got logs of a lot
of meetings like this, but I am not an archivist so, man, wow, talk about
the wayback machine.
