Thread: TNE PBEM/PBP?

25 posts.

The new guy here. I'm still reading through the list (I arbitrarily started
with this year and am up to April.) One thing I haven't seen any mention of
is TNE play online. Since I run a few online RPG's (by which I mean fantasy
games with 4-5 players, not some MMO), I'm wondering if there are any
Play-By-EMail (PbEM) or Play by Post (PbP) TNE games going on?

Thanks,

Scott
I had one about a decade back... I really ought repost what I managed to recover.

I was part of one, my job was to build a colony on a planet.  Had the PCs wake me up, we scanned the nearby planet, I outlined the rough steps to make a colony, then the GM disappeared.

This was after I had already gone through and set up a colony package using the ship's cargo mass availability (ignoring price).

Hi Scott,

Welcome and thanks for asking.

A few of us have toyed with the idea, (myself included.) but not much has come about.

Do you have an idea?

Yes there are. But this isn't the forum to run them. You can post
recruitment notices here, but you can't actually run them on this ml.

What I thought would be interesting as a PBEM game would be set in New Era
but played at the Mongoose Dynasty level rules

way, it ain't happening soon!

I was in TNE play by email years ago that puttered out after a few months. It would be fun to do one again. I like the forum rather than email format better because you can more easily thread the action and can control things better.

I'm going to come right out and say PBEM's are okay but you have to have the patience to spend MONTHS getting through dinner on the starship.

Yup...
Oddly enough, it's worked out well, over the years.
At least it has, over I can't recall how many, now...

An interesting counterpoint to "life, as I need to live it, in order to bring in the paycheck".

Yeah, as I said in my personal introduction, I run one face-to-face RPG and four Play-by-Post (message board) RPG's (all Pathfinder) and have run other online games (notably an Amber DRPG PBEM). So I'm pretty used to the reduced pace of online games. I find that while the pace is slower, it also allows for better narrative, more considered characterization and the ability to edit that stupid thing you might just have said. It also forms its own record of the game, so there's that.

I would -love- to run or play in a regular face-to-face (FTF) game of Traveller, but I know that's just not going to happen. By the time I have the time, I'll be using a walker to get there. So for now, online games are my only realistic option. If you embrace the positives, it makes acknowledging the negatives a whole lot easier.

Scott
Just wanted to make sure that was clear. =)

And I agree with Derek and murdoch's comments.

I run three PBEM campaigns: Two are late MT era (1126) while the third
is TNE up in the Extents near the Windhorn Rift. It's always been my
hope that the MT campaigns last long enough to face the shock of the
release of Virus, but who knows.

I was working hard to get a GM to let me play a pseudo-biological tl-14 robot in a MT campaign about 2 years before the genie got out of the bottle. I thought the idea has so much promise, sadly it kind of fell through.

That's one of the reason's I was asking for acronyms to go with M4R1A. I had a ton of ideas all thought out and had built the robot with the CT rules ... Which is horrifying to work with btw ...

It kind of generated out of the idea of having the players find a hidden compartment inside the jump drive with a disassembles robot inside it. Who put it there and why was it in pieces? I had a bit of a story, which as anyone who's tried to put more than 140 characters into a tablet is almost impossible.

The idea of having players go through the apocalypse or playing through that time just makes me giddy.

I would definitely be interested, if the game were on at least a semi-regular basis.

PBMB is definitely superior to PBEM, take it from someone with plenty of experience at both. If you would like to discuss good places to host a game and/or lessons learned and best practices, feel free to contact me offline at scottcnolan [at] gmail [dot] com.

Well that's really the question isn't it. I've always had a leaning towards a more military style campaign. Although I suppose in the NE they're all kind of "military" ops. Go here recon : survey / recover that and return. Whether you're a "military" unit or a bunch of free lancers or free traders it's almost always someone further up the food chain who's telling / asking you to go somewhere.

I'd vote for the RC or a Pocket Empire, but I'm easy on that score. TNE...TNE..TNE!
I have a variety of bad memories about Deneb. :)

I've always been a small campaign person, pocket empires, small client states. Places where PC's matter.

Just wanted to make sure that was clear. =)

And I agree with Derek and murdoch's comments.

I run three PBEM campaigns: Two are late MT era (1126) while the third is TNE up in the Extents near the Windhorn Rift. It's always been my hope that the MT campaigns last long enough to face the shock of the release of Virus, but who knows.

===============================

I'm hoping the MT campaigns last long enough to get to Virus as well!!!

Matt

PS I'd love to do a TNE game in the RC or out.

I'd also be interested in a PBEM game. Military unit of a pocket empire gives plenty of scope for excitement!

Cheers,

James
