My favorite example from my campaign is when I had carefully gotten my PCs
down onto a world, negotiating with local tribes where they could not get
back to their small craft quickly, when the giant, 400,000 ton spherical
ship appeared in orbit. This was actually their invitation to be "invited
aboard" and immersed in a complex, Dune-like political intrigue thing. I
had all of the NPCs generated, and all of the stub possible storylines.

But my PCs decided that anything that big must simply be a target. And so
they decided they were going to blow it up. I like to reward creativity,
and a couple hundred really unlikely die rolls, and brilliant heroic PC
improvisation later, which I also like to reward, there was a shattered
400,000 ton husk in orbit.

After getting over congratulating each other, they turned to me and said,
"so now what?"

And I held up the file folders of NPCs and said, "All this stuff, but you
just killed them all. So we're done for the night."
