Babylon 5 was the first show - at least to my memory - to have an ongoing story arc; the characters didn't get amnesia after every episode.

B5 doesn't really "begin" until season 2. Season 1 had a couple of episodes that had implications later, but it can mostly be skipped. Seasons 3 and 4 were great sci-fi, some of the best on TV up to that point IMO.
