It's not really *that* incomprehensible...
You pledge money:
- If the base target is reached by the deadline, they take the money that you pledged when the deadline is reached, and you (eventually, hopefully) receive the product you paid for.
- If the base target is not reached by the deadline, no money is taken from anybody and the project is not funded.
That's it really. IIRC Kickstarter and Amazon take a cut of the total funding but that's it.
