For a while, I used Traveller rules to play just about every era there
was. WW2, age of sail, etc. And that was the charm of the game. You could
go to any given planet and it could be the Horatio Hornblower planet, the
Battle of the Bulge planet, whatever. Or, as you point out, the weird
horror movie planet. I had a number of weird horror movie adventures. And
then you could climb back into your ship and move on to the next
environment. Of course Gene Roddenberry did all that before Gary Gygax
chained his first mail.
