Interesting viewpoint, in the "Honor Harrington" Universe the Inertial Damper appears to be a function of a seperate unit as opposed to the power plant per se. There even a 0.002413 second failure would likely be 100% fatal as that is all that prevents the crews from being made so much paste on the rear bulkhead. It's one of the 'handwaving' things that lets them push 200g for merchies and upwards of 500g+ on military. A number of other aspects which make it one of my fav sf series.
OT but in a way related note: reading reports from Michael Yon's blogspot and others...
...soldiers on "air guard" in strykers on patrol are knocked out by the blast from IED's, some squaddies relieve them whilst others care for the casualty...
that's not a quote but it's close...note that the blast strikes the exposed soldiers on air guard with sufficient strength to knock them out, sometimes causing concussion...
Having said that, would an inertial damper reduce the effects of ships manuevering and accel/decel sufficiently so that the crew can move about at an equivalent to experiencing 1g even if the ship is actually pushing 2, 3, 6, 12g or whatever is allowable in YTU?
