As I felt it, it is a meditation on the tension between love and violence and despair and crushing alienation and dehumanization, and how the love for humanity in the aggregate sometimes requires you to do things that dishonors love for humanity on the individual level. And the point is that even when you have to do unpleasant things for the greater good, which the RC did, good, honest, decent people still carry the scars of the cost.

Dave,
I always thought that the underlying tension and angst caused by the choices that had to be made in the RC made it much more 'real' for me. The setting let you head out into the darkness and make a difference even at a tremendous personal cost. Not so much a downer as a story of life in this imperfect world.
