possibly right per source ...
it was very kludgy - according to the article, iirc, the tanks carried the fuel to the jump point and then the jump drive some how devoured the entire amount of fuel carried in the process of creating the jump and the tanks were dropped prior to entry into jump space so the mass limit wasn't exceeded.

I can't rem where I saw it, but I believe it may have been a TAS journal entry that covered that topic. basically, the external drop tanks would allow multiple 1 parsec jumps with a full cargo hold. I can't rem the displacement of the drop tanks but the offhand guess was 20 tons,
