As I recall, controlled missiles suffer the range penalty of +1 DM per 3
hexes. I don't recall if guided missiles with their own sensors do (I
think not). An independent missile will have the advantage of not
suffering such penalties, and of not being limited in range by the
useful range of the mother ship's guidance systems and lag.

In TNE/FF&S the way to design them would seem to be to put robot brains
into them. This works pretty well because they make good missiles (the
brains can have skill in piloting and gunnery), but bad remote
ships/drones (robot brains can't have Tactics skill, and thus can't evade).
