Just to clarify the above...
The displacement tons for a Nimitz class Carrier (and any wet navy
ship or boat) refers to the amount of water displaced by it's
floating, not the craft's total internal volume as the measure is used
in Traveller.
Displacement tons in wet navy use are really a measure of weight,
which displaces volume equal to about 1 cubic meter of seawater per
displacement ton. So a Traveller volume ton is about 14 wet navy
displacement tons. I'll accept Peter's figure of 14.1264 as more
accurate but most of the time 14 is close enough and easier to remember :)
The problem is converting the wet navy displacement tons to Traveller
volume tons only accounts for the amount of ship volume below the
water line.
Also Register tons as I understand it are a different thing entirely
and are used only for measuring cargo volume defined as 100 cubic
feet, or about 2.8 cubic metres. So a Traveller volume ton would be
equal to about 5 Register tons.
I think I have that right. Feel free to correct any errors.
