Background:
The Ranger Corporation is a scout/exploration company, the largest now operating in the Spinward Marches. Currently has 20 scouts,and one scout tender. Based on Mora/Mora/Spinward Marches.

His willingness to help, natural shyness and extreme skill in piloting endeared Bated to the crew of the Second Guess.

While docked at one of Ruie's downports the crew decided to hit the bars, after trying unsuccessfuly to get Bates to join them. They never returned. The local police has not found a trace of them in two weeks of searching, and suspect that they have left the planet. Bates has contingency order to return to Mora, and is already looking for a crew to take the Second Guess home. However, he would love to make one last effort to find his shipmates.

His family consists of a wife on his homeworld of Tirem/Glisten/Spinward Marches, five grown kids (one in the Regency Navy) According to his culture, he's to be refered to by his Anglic name (David Keirsey Bates)when outside of Tirem system, his Chinese (Wu San-kuei) name when insystem, and his Vilani name (Abama Shigadishuu) by the nobility (regardless of where he is)

Appearance:
A gentle, nondescript man in his mid-forties. Of clear Solomani caucasian/oriental decent, with brown wavy hair growing gray on his temples. Bates dresses neatly and comfortably.

Personality:
Usually quiet and unassuming, Mr. Bates is an unlikely scout: he didn't even leave his home system till the age of 41. However, after he retired he decided to "tour a bit of hte Regency" and signed on with Ranger Corp. as a scout.

Possessions:
Ranger bank Card (TL F), w/500,000 Cr available. Current master of the Second Guess, since the real ship master went missing. A TL -D laser pistol, a pension from Tirem, of 23,100 Cr/year, a reserve commision in his nation's Air Force
